What are the chances of receiving the Deutschlandstipendium?

In principle everybody who achieved or will continue to achieve excellent results at school and/ or university can apply. However, the awarding of the Deutschlandstipendium also depends on how many sponsors support the scholarship programme at the university and for which fields of study scholarships are available. The total number of scholarships awarded since October 1st 2011 can be found here.

How many and for which fields of study are the Deutschlandstipendium scholarships awarded?

The expected number of Germany Scholarships to be awarded from October 2025 is 76 (state of 22.05.25). This number is updated on an ongoing basis.

You can find all current sponsors of the Deutschlandstipendium here.

Overview of fields of study.

Applications are also welcome for all degree programs, even if your degree program is not listed in the overview.

How can I apply?

Applications are made exclusively via the online portal, which is activated for the respective application period.

Applications for the winter semester 2026/2027 will be possible again from the summer semester 2026.

What documents do I need to submit for my application?

We have compiled a checklist of the documents you need to submit for your application. Only upload the required documents to the online portal in PDF format. Please avoid taking photos of your documents with your cell phone or from the screen! Poorly legible documents cannot be included in the application process.

When should I submit my application?

We strongly recommend that you do not start your application shortly before the respective application deadline. Start your application in good time to ensure that your application is received on time via the applicant portal.

What do I need to consider for my letter of motivation?

Your letter of motivation is an important part of your application. We have compiled the points you need to consider when writing your letter of motivation in a handout. Take time to write your letter of motivation. Reflect on your personality, your skills and your strengths and remain authentic.

I have not yet received an acceptance letter for my place at MLU or am not yet enrolled. Can I still apply?

Yes, you can still apply. In this case, please upload a copy of your acceptance letter, the online application form or, in the case of NC degree programs, the confirmation of your online application instead of your certificate of enrolment. In the application agreement, enter your application number instead of your matriculation number.

What should I do if I do not yet have any grades or my grade overview does not contain any credit points?

If you do not yet have any credit points (ECTS) and/or grades or these are not listed on your overview of grades, please contact your examination office to obtain an overview. If they do not tell you how many credit points you have already achieved, please enter “0” in your application and explain this in the query field “Explanation of credit points and grades”.

Please note: Students on examination courses should also use the query field for the intermediate examination grade!

I am a high school graduate and do not yet have my school leaving certificate. What do I need to consider?

If you do not yet have your university transcript at the time of application, please upload your most recent overview of grades (usually the last semester report) here.

Do I need letters of reference, expert opinions or letters of recommendation for my application?

No, these are not required and are not taken into account.

If you are reapplying, you can use your login data from last year (application phase from the previous winter semester). When logging in, please enter your email address and the password you used last year. If you do not have your old password, you can reset it using the "Reset Password" function.

This will allow you to use your applicant information from last year.

Please make sure that you update your data and attachments in the online portal, especially information on grades and credit points, other criteria and the current application agreement! Failure to update your information may result in your application being rejected.

What should I keep in mind if I exceed the standard period of study?

In principle, the Deutschlandstipendium is only granted within the standard period of study in the respective degree program.

In exceptional cases, the Deutschlandstipendium may be granted if the standard period of study is exceeded in the case of

  • a disability/serious chronic illness
  • pregnancy
  • the care and upbringing of a child
  • a study-related stay abroad

This information must be clearly explained in the application and be the reason for the extension of the standard period of study.

3. Regulation of the standard period of study due to the Covid 19 pandemic

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, a regulation was made regarding the standard period of study (here, at the end). For students who were enrolled in

  • summer semester 2020
  • winter semester 2021/22
  • summer semester 2021
  • winter semester 2021/22

and not on leave during that time, the standard period of study extends up to four semesters. This means, that the Germany scholarship can also be received up to four semesters beyond the actual standard period of study.

You can find more information on this under the link.
